Know the signs before it becomes a flood
Most drain problems announce themselves weeks before they become a mess on the floor. Here is what to watch for, what we actually clear, and why the bottle of chemicals under your sink is not the answer.
Signs your drain needs a plumber
A drain rarely blocks all at once. If you recognize more than one of these, the line is telling you something:
- Water drains slowly from the sink, tub, or shower
- Gurgling sounds coming from drains when water runs
- Water backs up into the sink or tub when you flush the toilet
- Multiple drains in the house are slow at the same time
- Standing water around the basement floor drain
- A sewage smell near drains that comes and goes
- A clog that returns within weeks of being cleared
One slow drain vs. several
One slow sink is usually a local clog. Several slow drains at once - especially with gurgling toilets - usually means the problem is further down the line, and may call for a camera inspection rather than another round of clearing.
Keeping it from coming back
Most kitchen clogs start with grease. It goes down the drain hot and liquid, then cools and sets on the pipe walls, narrowing the line a little more with every wash-up. Pour it into a can instead, and scrape plates before rinsing.
In bathrooms, a hair catcher on the tub and shower drains stops the most common blockage before it starts. And the toilet takes toilet paper - wipes marked "flushable" do not break down in the line, and they are a common cause of main-line blockages.

Why store-bought drain cleaners make it worse
Chemical drain cleaners rarely clear a real blockage.
